An Post's Matt Teggart taking shape in Tour du Normandie
Young Irish rider Matt Teggart is back from injury and has taken his best result of the season so far.
Matt Teggart has given a strong indication that his form is going in the right direction with a strong result at the Tour du Normandie.
The 21-year-old took 17th place in yesterday's stage 5, a very decent showing considering the lumpy terrain.
Teggart has already been forced out of competition this season to recover from a knee injury so his presence at the pointy end of the action after a long day in the saddle bodes well.
He finished on the same time as stage winner Johim Ariesen (Metec-TKH) who sprinted in from a near 70-strong reduced peloton.
The stage took the riders 158km from La Ferté-Macé to Bagnoles-de-l'Orne-Normandie, with two categorised climbs on the undulating route.
“From the off the pace was very high as usual with lots of attacks especially from all our guys,” Teggart said.
“We were all really aggressive today and really forcing the moves on the hills all of us were having a go at getting away.”
Teggart said his team mate Mark Stewart rode especially well, forcing the day’s main breakaway of eight riders clear after an hour of racing.
He would later push on from that escape with two others. But while they still had a small gap as they passed through the finish line with a 10km lap remaining they were caught with 4km remaining.
That paved the way for a sprint from the thinned out bunch. The only other Irishman in the race Sean McKenna (An Post-Chainreaction) finished 120th some 8:13 down.
With two stages remaining Anthony Delaplace (Fortuneo -Vital Concept) leads the race overall. Teggart is 69th at 12:24 and McKenna is 120th at 27:59 in the seven-stage 2.2 event.
