Alan Hickey Scott Orwell wins Charleville Two Day

On today's final stage of the A4 race at the Charleville Two Day, Alan Buckley of Greenmount saw the yellow jersey taken from his shoulders by a breakaway.

And while Bandon CC’s Don Keohane won the stage from that escape, it was Alan Hickey of Scott-Orwell who proved the biggest winner.

He had begun the day in 7th at 40 seconds; all of that time relinquished in Saturday evening’s TT which Buckley won.

But by the end of this afternoon’s final stage, a 12-man breakaway had put the guts of two minutes into a chase group containing the yellow jersey.

In the end the gap between breakaway and the 14 chasers was 1:43, with a couple of riders in between.

That lifted many of the breakaway men to the top of the final standings.

Alan Hickey would run out the winner by eight seconds from Dolmen CC’s Albert Murphy; one of the stage 3 escapees who would finish 4th on the stage.

Rounding out the final podium was the man who won that final stage; Bandon’s Keohane. He was 11 seconds down overall in 3rd, a nice day's work.

Buckley, who had ridden so well in the stage 2 TT in winning by a margin of 30 seconds despite the short race distance of 6km, slipped from yellow down to 12th overall at 1:03.
