Aine Doherty takes three Irish titles from National Youth Champs

Aine Doherty (VC Glendale) has won the three Irish U16 titles - road race, TT and criterium - at the Youth National Road Championships hosted by Shelbourne-Orchard CC over the weekend. Doherty, who moves into the junior races next year, represented Ireland at the recent European Youth Olympics Festival.

In the road race at the weekend she topped the podium from Lucy Brown (Phoenix CC) and Hannah Hayes (TC Racing). Doherty finished solo some 2:31 ahead of the Brown and Hayes, who had a two-up sprint to decided the destination of the silver and bronze medals.

The destination of the medals was the same in the TT; Doherty winning by 27 seconds from Brown, with Hayes in 3rd at 35 seconds. And in the criterium, Doherty claimed the victory from Hayes un 2nd and Brown in 3rd place.

The U15 girls races followed a similar patter, with the same three riders taking the medals across the three different events. Aliyah Rafferty (Island Wheelers) won the road race by 1:49 from Kate Murphy (Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club), with Mya Doocey (Navan Road Club) 3rd at 3:58.

Rafferty also told gold in the criterium, from Doocey and Murphy. And in the TT it was Doocey who emerged as champion, beating Rafferty by five seconds, with Murphy 3rd at 30 seconds.
