Irish champ Doherty fights from last through field after crash in Britain

Irish youth cyclocross champion Aine Doherty has shown her stripes riding in Britain today; fighting from the back of the field to 11th despite crash injuries.

The Irish teenager rides for VC Glendale and has been very impressive off-road coming up through the ranks.

She was competing in the youth race in the opening round of the HSBC UK Cyclo-Cross National Trophy Series in Derby today when she crashed at the start.

As she came down on a paved section of the course, she was left with more than a few cuts and bruises.

Her worst injury was a significant loss of skin on her left shin, as well as cuts and bruises to her arm and hip.

As a result of the crash she slipped back down through the 80-rider field to last place. However, she steadied herself and got going again.

Doherty then proceeded to put in a really spirited display in picking off most of the riders ahead of her and ending the race in 11th place; a great result.
