Aine Doherty, Dean Harvey take dominant wins in Portadown

Aine Doherty (VC Glendale) and Dean Harvey (Spellman Dublin Port) have scored their latest victories in ‘Round 5’ of the Ulster Cyclocross Series in Portadown. Both were clearly superior in the women’s and men’s main events, with plenty of time to spare at the chequered flag.

In the five-lap women’s race, Doherty began her effort with real intent and put over 40 seconds into her closest challengers on the day; Stephanie Roche (Scott Bright Motor Group) and Niamh Stephens (Team Giant Dublin).

And throughout the remainder of the contest her gap out front grew bigger all the way to the finish. She added between 30 and 45 seconds each lap until the final circuit. At that point, with victory already in the bag, she eased off a little and still ran out the winner by 3:11 from Roche

Stephens placed 3rd, just 11 seconds behind Roche, and having closed up on her through the first half of the contest after losing time on the opening lap. However, Roche put in a strong penultimate lap to reinstate some of her lost time and ensure the runner-up spot.

National masters road race champion Helen White (Stamullen RC) took 4th place, with Lucy Brown (Phoenix CC) 5th and Caroline Martinez (Chain Reaction Cycles) rounding out the top six.

The men’s ‘A Race’ went very much the same as the women’s event; eventual winner Harvey getting ahead early and never looking back. He had beaten national cyclocross champion Chris McGlinchey (Spectra Wiggle p/b Vitus) to win on Saturday in Co Louth and on Sunday was an even more impressive victor.

He put the best part of a minute into nearest rival, Graham Boyd (McConvey Cycles), on the opening lap and continued in that vein over the remaining six laps. In the end, Harvey won from Boyd by 4:02, with Des Woods of Newry Wheelers in 3rd place at 5:07.

David O’Neill (Inspired Cycling) was 4th, with Barry Convery (Newry Wheelers) 5th and Jason Henry (Inspired Cycling) in 6th place.

The men’s ‘B Race’ was won by Ciaran Campbell (Square Wheelers), by 11 seconds, from Stuart Suckling (VC Glendale). Glen Curry (Ards CC) was 3rd just seven seconds further back.
