Roger Aiken has extended to six his run of victories at the Ulster Cyclocross Series after a cold but dry encounter in Larne yesterday, Sunday.
The Banbridge CC man’s team mate Matthew Adair was the only rider in the field who could match Aiken in the opening exchanges of the 10-lap race in Seacourt.
He came through the start-finish area after both the first and second laps side by side with Aiken, though on the third lap he lost ground, with Aiken gaining a significant advantaged of 32 seconds on that circuit.
From there it was a familiar sight for people who have watched both Aiken’s and Robin Seymour’s (Team WORC) winning runs in the Ulster and Dublin series’ respectively this year, with Aiken simply powering around the course and putting further daylight into the rest of the field on almost every lap to the finish.
On the fourth lap Adair managed to hold the gap at exactly 31 seconds, with eventual third placed rider John Bogues (Phoenix CC) some 54 seconds down.
However, by the finish Aiken clocked a time of exactly 51 minutes, with Adair crossing the line some 2:25 down in second, Bogues a further 56 seconds back and O’Regan in fourth just 21 seconds off the podium.
With just one round remaining in Cookstown in a fortnight, Aiken now has an unassailable lead in the 2012 Ulster Cyclocross Series and will undoubtedly be the favourite along with Seymour for the Cyclocross National Championships in January.
