Aiken storms to win in Dungannon; emerging teenager Montgomery pushes him closest

It was a very muddy affair in Dungannon but nothing could stop national champion Roger Aiken on his way to another win; captured here in the mud by photographer Toby Watson.

National Cyclocross Champion, Roger Aiken may have been the county rider of the An Post Rás on the road back in May, but any suggestion he wouldn’t peak again before the year was out has been firmly put to rest just a couple of weeks into the new cyclocross campaign.

The Banbridge CC man took round 3 of the Ulster Cyclocross Series in Dungannon yesterday, Sunday, to add to his opening round win of the season in Lurgan Park two weeks ago.

He did not take part in round 2 last weekend, when Robin Seymour and Evan Ryan made the trip north to take a 1-2 for Team WORC.

However, there was no danger of Aiken coming away from yesterday’s wet and muddy outing with anything  but another win.

The cyclocross scene is currently experiencing something of a boom, with the Ulster Series and its Fixx Coffeehouse Supercross Cup counterpart in Leinster forced to lay on two senior races - A & B - each round this year and last.

If the scene has one weakness, it’s the dominance of Seymour and Aiken and the predictability of the results when they race; save for their rare head-to-head meetings.

However, some good news in that regard yesterday was the performance of junior rider David Montgomery.

He may have been well beaten in the end by the master, but young Montgomery is starting to show that he has the potential to put it up to the older pairing and if he keeps the head down, he should get on terms with them – or close to it – in the next season or two.

Aiken was the quickest around all of the six laps yesterday, and already had a three second lead on Montgomery was they went through the start-finish area to go out onto the second lap.

That lead grew by around 30 seconds every lap until the finish, where Aiken’s time of 51 mins 12 secs was a comfortable 2:03 quicker than his teenage rival. Glen Kinning of East Antrim-Audi was a further 1:37 adrift in 3rd place. Gill Smith of Phoenix CC took the women’s prize.

The B race was won by Gary Jeffers of East Tyrone CC who was one of the revelations of the road season, taking a number of very strong wins against top opposition and generally making his presence felt every time he raced.

Yesterday saw a huge amount of racing, with the promoting club Island Wheelers running not only A and B cyclocross races but also an MTB support race and girls and boys races for every youth category, from U16 to U6.

The biggest field of the day was in the MTB support race, where North Down CC’s Paul Ferguson prevailed by 23 seconds over Cathal Henderson (Apollo CT). Steven Mulholland (Carn Wheelers) was just four further seconds adrift in 3rd place.
