Marc Flavin of Dungarvan Cycling Club has taken a remarkable overall win at the Corkman Three-Day in Kanturk this afternoon, Monday.
Flavin went into this morning’s stage in fifth position, trailing overnight race-leader Alan Galavan (Slaney CC) by 14 seconds. But when he escaped on the fourth and final lap today with Olan Barrett (Fermoy CC) and Mick Butler (Visit Nenagh-DMG) it was clear he had more than the stage win in mind.
Barrett too had designs on the yellow jersey as he lined up for the start in Kanturk in ninth place, some 19 seconds off the lead, while Butler was only 49 seconds off the yellow jersey.
So it was little surprise when they attacked - just after the day’s break had been caught on the final lap – that they stayed away to the finish.
The slight tailwind on the final half-lap worked in their favour and they managed to hold off a rapidly closing bunch.
Barrett rocketed up the hill to the finish the quickest and he just edged out Butler by half a wheel for the stage win, with Flavin third just behind.
Though he lost four seconds in the final metres up the hill, the Dungarvan man just did enough to wrestle the yellow jersey from Galavan.
Barrett will rue a missed opportunity for outright victory, despite taking an impressive stage win. Had he pulled out just two more seconds he would have won the overall but it wasn't to be and he can look back on a very good weekend.
Barrett is a brother of Stephen Barrett who rode for the national team for a number of years and is most famous for going on the longest solo break in the history of the FBD Rás, in 2009. He now does some work with Forme Coaching; no doubt having an input in his sibling’s success today.
Bryan Long (Finance First Wills Wheels Cork County) led in the bunch sprint with a devastating burst of speed with Barry Twohig of Blarney just behind him.
But the day belonged to Flavin and though he might have come into the race under the radar, he profited from some selfless work by his team-mates; the evergreen Damian Travers just one of several who rode a steady tempo at the front when the early break went up the road.
That early move, incidentally, was very promising as it featured Simon Ryan (Visit Nenagh-Team DMG) who started the day in 10th, Cathal Moynihan (Tralee CC) who was sixth and Dermot Radford (Tipp Wheelers) in 13th.
That trio were no more than 28 seconds off the race lead and when they went up the road at the end of the second lap and quickly gained over a minute, it looked like Moynihan was going to snatch the GC win, as he was leader on the road closely followed by Ryan.
But Blarney CC and their numerical advantage went to work at the front, as did Dungarvan -protecting the interests of Flavin, while St Finbarr's (looking after Dylan Foley) and Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers) looking after Sean Hahessy, also did some big turns.
But it was Blarney who brought that trio back into sight and Simon Ryan was first to sit up, sensing the breakaway's race was run and leaving Radford and Moynihan to go it alone. But their attempts at staying away were in vain.
As soon as they were absorbed, Butler initiated the attack on the latter half of the third lap with Barrett and Flavin sensing an opportunity. That was, in short, the winning of the race.
