Adam Ward has taken victory in the main event at the Lakeland GP today when he saw off a strong breakaway with a very impressive finishing effort.

The 20-year-old, a former national junior road race champion, took it up very early in sight of the finish line. And when he gapped the five men he was with the others simply couldn't get back on terms.

On the finish line Ward, riding this year for Antiga Casa Bellsolà Club Ciclista, had pulled out a clear gap on the best of the rest; Mark Dowling (All Human-VeloRevolution) taking 2nd place.

The in-form rider of the season, with three victories so far, Gareth O'Neill (Caldwell Cycles) had to settle for 3rd place today with Lindsay Watson (Powerhouse Sport) 4th.

Mark McGinley, the Four Masters CC rider who won this race two years ago, was 5th and Nathan Keown (Dan Morrissey-McCarthy Insurance-Pactimo) was 6th, rounding out the six-man breakaway.

In the A4 race Colin Howley (Yeats Country Cycling Club) took the victory and two of the best young female riders in the country - Darcey Harkness (VC Glendale) and Caoimhe O Brien (Weston Homes-Torelli-Assure) – were right behind him in 2nd and 3rd places.
