Brandon McNulty is a name you’ll be hearing loads more about in the months and years ahead after the US junior cycling sensation obliterated the field in this morning’s time-trial at the world championships in Doha.
His winning time of 34.42 was a whole 35 seconds better than the man who took silver and it was even quicker than the man who took bronze in the U23 race yesterday on the same course, Miles Scotson.
Of course, McNulty’s win is no major surprise as he’s not lost a contest against the clock since he was third in Richmond 12 months ago as a first-year junior.
And from an early stage today it was clear he was on for another massive performance when he posted the quickest times at the intermediate checkpoints and eventually caught is one and two-minute men.
The last two Americans to win the event, by the way, were Greg LeMond in 1979 and Taylor Phinney in 2007.
No pressure then.
Silver today went to Danish rider Mikkel Berg in 35:17 while bronze was won by McNulty's teammate Ian Garrison in 35:35.
More on how the two Irish riders, Xeno Young and Ronan Tuomey, fared shortly.
