Paul O’Reilly has recorded the upset of the cyclocross season to date with a fine victory over Robin Seymour (Team Worc) in Sunday’s Kalas Superleague Series race run by Dublin City XC in Kilruddery, Co Wicklow.

O’Reilly was runner-up to Seymour in Tymon Park, Tallaght, Dublin, last weekend but turned the tables in spectacular fashion yesterday.

He would claim victory over the usually unbeatable Seymour after both experienced bad luck in the closing stages of what proved to be a fantastic contest out front.

On a demanding course featuring a strong field, O’Reilly (Fixx Rouleurs) kept himself up towards the front and a close watch on Seymour.

But feeling good, he pressed ahead with two laps to go and pulled out a lead of around 30 seconds on Seymour before disaster struck.

Descending a fast section of the course, O’Reilly came down on a slippery corner and that saw his lead cut in half, with Seymour now within sight.

The eventual winner kept his composure before remounting and racing on, only for more bad luck to befall him.

This time, his chain came off which allowed Seymour to assume the lead, but not for long.

O’Reilly caught Seymour once more but apparently feeling apprehensive on the descent, Seymour was back on level terms inside the final lap.

This time, the bad luck was all Seymour’s as he punctured at the worst possible time and O’Reilly was able to solo to victory.
