Youngest son of Johan Museeuw set for pro peloton debut season

Johan Museeuw was king of the peloton in his day and now his son, Stefano, is stepping into pro road racing; riding for a Continental team but when a race programme that includes some events against WorldTour teams

Stefano Museeuw, the youngest son of former king of the classics Johan Museeuw, is set to make his debut in the pro peloton this year after signing with a Continental team.

The 22-year-old, who raced on the road as a junior before switching to cyclocross, had been signed with Team Monti, an Italian squad backed by WorldTour outfit Deceuninck-QuickStep.

However, Team Monti in recent weeks announced it was pausing its plans for now to have a Continental set-up and will focus instead on junior racing this year.

That left Stefano Museeuw without a team on the eve of the new season but he has now secured a berth with the Beat Cycling Club squad.

It is a small team that has punched well above its weight in road and track cycling; including winning world and European titles on the track.

Museeuw’s results on the road have been modest so far, with his only wins coming in regional events. However, the team believes his switching focus from cyclocross to the road will help him progress.

Beat Cycling Club’s riders will this year go up against WorldTour teams in some races including Bredene-Koksijde, Scheldeprijs, ZLM Tour and Tour of Belgium.

It will also ride many second tier pro races against Conti and ProConti teams across Europe as well as taking in some gravel events.

“With my background in cyclocross, it’s perhaps not
surprising that I also feel good off-road,” Museeuw said of looking forward to
the gravel races.

“At the same time, I want to show myself everywhere;
getting into a break, finishing as well as possible, helping lead out the
sprint for the team.

“I am delighted with this opportunity and am happy to be
called in where the team needs me. I am certainly looking forward to it.”
