From the O'Leary Stone Kanturk stable, Daniel Yon Hin is continuing to get the miles in on the open road thanks to his new health care worker job.
The emerging young rider, who enjoyed a very strong season last year, is now delivering medicine to his father's patients during the Covid19 lock-down period.
It means he's doing his bit for older and isolated people with underlying health conditions while also enjoying the freedom of the open road on his bike as he goes about his business.
Yon Hin is aged 17 years and is a second-year junior this year. He's in 5th year at Tutorial College, Limerick, but with school out for now due to Covid19 he has plenty of time to commit to his new delivery job.
“My Dad is a GP in Roscrea and he runs a busy surgery,”
Yon Hin told stickybottle of how the job came about.
“I cycle from my home in Nenagh to Roscrea, which is
about 35km, and then I pick up the prescriptions and addresses from the surgery.
“I then cycle to the chemist and wait for the medication
and deliver it to the patients. Some are in the town area others are up to 15km
outside Roscrea.
“Some of the houses can be quite rural and other patients
are on my way home; thank God for Google maps because some of these places are
hard to find,” he joked.
While he said the job enabled him to get the miles in at
a time when Covid19 lock-down means exercise for everyone else is limited to
within 2km of home, Yon Hin said the delivery service was very useful to his
father’s patients.
“Most of them are elderly, vulnerable or cancer patients.
They’re isolated so this service really helps them.
“It means they don’t have to come into the surgery or go
to the chemist where there’s a high risk of catching the virus.
“It’s also good for my training also as I get the miles in cycling out and back to different places. I also get some efforts done on my way back home."
