Ireland
will have four junior riders in the European Cyclocross Championships in Italy
tomorrow, Sunday.
Donning
the green of Ireland are four of our best juniors and they will compete on a
very muddy and non-technical course in Silvelle.
The word from the Irish camp is that the
course is very flat and has several dykes that will force riders to dismount
and run for significant distances.
It means the course will suited powerful
riders who are good on their feet in what looks set to be muddy and slow
racing.
The junior races are both on tomorrow morning and with European titles on the line it will be a big, but exciting, step up for the four young Irish talents on the start line; each of them having earned their places at this level.

In the
junior women’s race Ireland has Darcey Harkness (Carn
Wheelers) and Roisin
Lally in its two-rider line-up.
Some
of the other nations have much larger numbers. Italy, for example, has no fewer
than eight in their junior women’s team, with four reserves also travelling.
The
junior women’s race gets underway tomorrow at 9am local time, or 10am Irish
time.
There
are 78 starters in the men’s junior race which gets underway at 9.50am local
time, or 10.50am Irish time.
Like
the junior women’s race, Ireland also has two riders in the men’s event. Darren
Rafferty (Island Wheelers) and Ciaran Dixon
(Team Type 1) have
both secured selection for their country.
There
are just 27 starters in the U23 women’s race and 47 starters in the U23 men’s
race.
In the
elite men’s race there are just 30 starters and there are only 25 starters in
the elite women’s race.
The
Irish team has been selected, coached and organised by Cycling Ireland’s
off-road commission and this time around it has decided to field a junior team
only; due mainly to budgetary constraints.
