Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) has been diagnosed with concussion after his stage 3 crash at UAE Tour yesterday. The British rider was came down with just under 50km to go and appeared to hit the ground with real force.

It seemed his upper body and head took a significant impact, though he was able to get back to his feet and got back on his bike. However, he later abandoned the stage, which finished on Jebel Jais.

Though Yates was able to return to the race yesterday, it appeared he did so very quickly and without the time being taken to do more extensive roadside checks to assess his health after the fall.

His team has now confirmed he has been diagnosed with concussion, with its medical director, Dr Adrian Rotunno, offering an update on the condition of Yates, who was a hot favourite to win the race overall.

"Unfortunately, Adam Yates has been diagnosed with a concussion after his crash at the UAE Tour," he said. He is stable with other superficial injuries.

"For the sake of Adam’s health, and as per concussion protocols, he was withdrawn from racing. He will need recovery, and the medical team will continue with neurological monitoring and rehab going forward."

Yates had already show very good form this year in winning the queen stage, on the Green Mountain finish, and the overall at Tour of Oman (2.Pro). He went into UAE Tour as a likely candidate for more stage wins and the overall.

In his absence in the finale yesterday, Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) attacked with just over 1km to go, led initially by his team mate Valentin Paret-Peintre.

They pulled out a sizeable gap on the remains of the peloton and when Paret-Peintre pulled over with about 900m to go, O'Connor was able to power all the way to the line to win solo. He was five seconds clear of the chasing group, led in by Jay Vine (UAE Tour), who is now the new leader of the race.
