When Martyn Irvine sits down to write his story at the end of his career, there’ll be no shortage of drama.
The track ace has World Championships gold and two silvers to his name, and boasts the same haul of silverware from the UCI World Cup series, along with a European Championship bronze and too many national titles to mention.
However, his list of broken bones from high speed spills – on track bikes with fixed wheels and no brakes – is almost as impressive.
He’s currently in recovery mode following a tricky crash in the opening round of the current World Cup series in Guadalajara, Mexico, four weeks ago.
In the first of six events in the two-day omnium competition, Irvine came a cropper in the scratch race.
He went over the handlebars and broke his collar bone, after breaking his femur last year only a few weeks after winning his world title.
He’s just taken to social media to post this X-ray (below) of the scaffolding left in his shoulder.
The X-ray was taken in a check-up where he was thankfully given the all clear.
He should be fighting fit for the third round of the World Cup in Cali, Colombia, in the New Year followed in quick succession by the World Championships in France.

More metal! Some advice, do not land on your shoulder when you crash!! http://t.co/uDvZLL332T
