Xeno Young (18) shows one of his wounds after being knocked off his bike out training. A police investigation is now underway. He has won medals at Worlds and Europeans. He is also only back from the Commonwealth Games.
Xeno Young knocked off bike by motorist while training
One of the biggest talents the Irish cycling scene has at present, Xeno Young has been knocked off his bike out training.
A motorist coming out of their driveway hit Young while he was on a training ride at the weekend.
He was sent flying into barbed wire in a ditch and was left shaken by the experience.
Last year he powered to silver medals at the World Championships and Europeans in the junior category individual pursuit.
He has also ridden for Ireland at the World Road Championships as a junior. And he has been picked in recent months to ride at elite World Cup level.
His training ride crash occurred not long after he had returned from the Commonwealth Games. He represented Northern Ireland on track and road in Australia.
He sustained injuries to his shoulder, arm and ankle in the incident at about 10am on Sunday.
Xeno Young is a class act, especially on the track.
His father Garth said he was about 50 miles into a 110 mile ride when he was knocked into a ditch and onto barbed wire on the Roguery Road, Toome.
"He's quite shaken still. Even if he was fit to go out on his bike today, he doesn't want to,” he told Belfast Live.
"The driver was coming out of his driveway. Xeno saw the car, but it just pulled out and he collided with it.
“The car hit him into a ditch. As he was going through the barbed wire fence he took the fence post out with him. He was an extremely lucky boy.
"He has pretty serious bruising and scratches on his arm and shoulder. His ankle and shoulder are swollen."
Plans undermined by crash
"This is a big setback for him at a critical point in his cycling career. His training to date was based around a good performance at the Commonwealth Games.
“And he achieved that with a personal best time in the individual pursuit on the track with an exceptional time for an 18-year-old.
"This weekend he started his build up for a season of road racing. But that came to an abrupt end on Sunday morning.
“He’s only 18 and loves riding his bike but doesn’t want to go back out on the road at the minute."
