His name has cropped up again and again in recent seasons after some very strong riding, but in June life took a challenging turn for young Conor McCann.
One of the best juniors in the country, McCann was travelling to a race in the UK when his team car was involved in an accident.
Thankfully he has been recovering well, but having broken his back in the smash it was a very worrying turn of events for him and his family.
He suffered fractures to his L1 (lumbar 1) and T12 (thoracic) vertebrae and was pinned, X-rays below, in surgery at a Dover hospital.
He spent almost a week recovering in England before travelling home to Bellaghy, Co Derry.
Having won the Groucho GP in Richhill in the weeks leading up to the crash, McCann was looking forward to a busy and likely successful summer with his NRPT-Magnet.ie team.
However, his season was obviously over and while back on his back he is still gently easing himself into training, with his priority to allow the healing process run its course.
We’ll have an interview with Conor in the next day or two. It is fantastic to hear that he is firmly on the mend and back on his bike.

This x-ray is a front facing view of the plates and screws surrounding the L1 (lumbar) vertebrae that were inserted to stabilise his spine during a surgery known as a spinal fusion.
