Some of Team Sky's riders came down hard at speed while training for the team time trial at the World Championships, as Danny Pate's photo reveals.
The World Championships hopes of some of Team Sky’s riders have taken a massive knock following a crash on a recon ride of the team time trial (TTT) course.
The team test gets the World Road Championships in Richmond, Virginia, underway today, Sunday.
However, British rider Luke Rowe along with Italian Elia Viviani and American Danny Pate all crashed hard while doing around 60kph.
Pate posted the photo below on Instagram revealing the extent of some nasty looking road rash.
They were riding with Vasil Kyrienka, Salvatore Puccio, and Ian Stannard at the time, though it appears that trio stayed upright.
The spill comes as a particular blow to Viviani as he was fancied to make an impression in the men’s road race next Sunday.
The Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies women’s team also crashed in during TTT training, with five of its six riders hitting the deck.
Annie Ewart suffered a broken collar bone and is out of the Worlds while team mate Maura Kinsella suffered a concussion, which will probably rule her out of the TTT.
Both teams came down after their riders hit sunken manhole covers on stretches of road resurfaced for the Worlds.

Annie Stewart was all set for the TTT with Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies and her first Worlds for Canada in the elite women's road race. But she has been forced out before battle even commenced.
