The reigning paracycling pursuit world champions, Catherine Walsh and Fran Meehan have set a new Irish record at the Paralympic Games in London today in the Individual B 1km Time Trial.

The duo kept their heads after a starting hiccup to clock the record time of 1:12.864, which saw them finish 5th.

Meehan said afterwards they were delighted with the performance ahead of their specialist 3km pursuit speciality.

“This is just a dress rehearsal for the pursuit on Sunday and we broke the Irish record,” she said.

Walsh said they simply kept focussed when Meehan’s shoe clipped out of the pedal metres from the start gate, with the pair then given a restart.

“We just stayed calm, it didn’t affect our performance as it was a mechanical, these things happen,” said the six-time Paralympian.

In the same event, the second Irish pairing of former world rowing champion Katie-George Dunlevy and her pilot Sandra Fitzgerald clocked a personal best of 1:14.315 which gave them a seventh place finish.

The Australian tandem took the title in a time of 1:08.919, just outside world record pace.
