The UCI has said safety will be assured for today's women's road race at the World Championships in Imola, Italy, after the finish line gantry collapsed yesterday.
During the men's TT title race the riders faced a strong headwind out and tailwind on the reverse run back into the Imola motor racing track where the races finish.
About 30 minutes after the men's TT, won by Italian Filippo Ganna, the scaffolding arch over the finish line and the structure holding it up crashed down onto the finishing straight.
Luckily the incident took place after the race was concluded and the crew working on the event had plenty of time to put the structure back in place and to make sure it was secured.
"Due to the very strong wind today, the finish arch fell down in the late afternoon, after the end of the race," the UCI said.
"The staff of the organising committee and the UCI are working to ensure the equipment is in perfect working order for tomorrow’s race."
The embarrassing incident follows controversy over the safety and barrier set-up at the Tour de Pologne last month. A crash at the end of the opening stage saw Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-QuickStep) crash through the barriers, which then bounced back into the road causing other riders to fall at high speed.
Last week riders at the Tour de Luxembourg staged a protest due to the large number of vehicles on the course only for a truck to meet the riders on the road on the final stage, causing a crash.
