Work is to get underway next month on the 23km Midleton to Youghal greenway in Co Cork after €8 million was provided for it.
Clearance works along the disused railway line the greenway
will run on are to commence next month.
And while that work will take some time, and stretch into next year, the actual construction of the greenway is set to begin around next spring.
Cork County Council has now confirmed the timetable,
saying it was hoping the new facility will bring over 200,000 visitors per year
into the area.
The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher
O’Sullivan welcomed the plans saying: “The greenway will offer an important
boost to tourism across the county and especially for East Cork.
“Youghal and Midleton are likely to benefit from
increased visitor numbers and a significant boost to the local economy.
“It will also be an important recreational amenity for
the local community, with all the positive impacts on health and wellbeing that
brings.
“The route takes in Ballvergan Marsh a wonderful
opportunity to experience this unique coastal wetland with its spectacular
views to Youghal Bay.”
In a statement, Cork County Council said: “It is planned
that site clearance work will be undertaken between November 2019 and February
2020 which will facilitate site investigation.
“This stage will be followed by detailed design and it is
anticipated that construction will start in late spring 2020.
“It is estimated that the Greenway will take
approximately two-and-a-half years to fully complete.”
The old railway corridor is directly adjoined by a
mixture of residential, agricultural, commercial and community property.
Letters will issue shortly to the registered land owners
of these properties, outlining next steps and requesting contact details to
facilitate communication in the roll out of the project.
The 23km Greenway secured planning approval earlier this
year and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport have since awarded
funding of €8million.
