Work on a new Irish greenway was halted when workmen clearing the route discovered human remains. Gardai were called in and closed off the area, with an investigation now underway.
It was not clear at the time of writing how long the
remains were there, or even if they dated to the modern era or were there,
laying undiscovered, for a much longer period.
The skeletal remains were discovered at around 5.30pm on
Tuesday during clearing works on the route of the Midleton to Youghal Greenway.
The area where the remains, including a human skull, were
found on Dungourney Road on the outskirts of Midleton in east Cork was sealed
off when the alarm was raised.
Gardai have called in the services of the national
pathology office in a bid to determine how old the remains are and possibly how
the person died.
The greenway project, which has been projected to cost
€19 million, is expected to rejuvenate a section of east Cork.
Though some local people believed the railway line should
be reopened instead of a greenway being built, that option has been ruled out
on commercial grounds.
The rail track would take well over €150 million to
upgrade the disused railway line to be able to take trains again.
Work was expected to remain halted on the clearing works for the greenway until gardai have more information about the human remains found on Tuesday.
