The woman hit by Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) after the finish line of stage 3 of La Vuelta in Andorra is a staff member for the Andorra Police. There was confusion about the identity of the woman, with many reports stating she was either a team soigneur or a journalist.
However, she is a staff with the Andorra Police, with some international reports stating she works as a press officer with the force. She emerged from a medical truck with her arm in a sling after she was hit by stage winner Evenepoel as she was in the crowd immediately after the line.
The set-up in the finish area was very congested, with the crowd in that area very close to the line and blocking most of the road. Evenepoel sprinted over the line, which was slightly downhill, and then celebrate his win before his speed carried him towards the crowd.
The woman he hit, named as 'Jasmine', was in the crowd and if Evenepoel had not hit her, he would have hit a crash barrier, just inches further ahead of him. While the Belgian champion suffered a nasty cut beside his right eye, he was cleaned up after the stage and it seems he will continue in the race.
The woman he hit was also up and moving about yesterday evening after the unfortunate incident, though Evenepoel was rightly very critical of the way the finish area was organised. However, after the drama of the moment had passed, he seemed more relaxed and took to social media to assure everyone that, apart from his obvious wound, he appeared to have no other injuries.
"Everything is fine. Only my head is a bit open. But otherwise there are no injuries to my hip or anything. Luckily I didn't break anything. I think I won't be affected, hopefully. All's well that ends well. This was a special victory, with a somersault added."
