Woman arrested after cyclist killed in Sunday morning road crash

A cyclist has been killed in a crash, involving a driver, on Sunday morning, with investigating gardaí making an arrest

A cyclist has been killed in a crash involving a motorist in Co Kerry. A Garda investigation into the fatal incident has begun and the investigation team, based in Killarney Garda station, have arrested a woman for questioning.

The dead man was in his 60s, while the woman arrested is in her 20s. She was being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and was being questioned on Sunday at a Garda station in the Kerry region.

In a statement, Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, said the fatal crash occurred on the Killorglin to Cromane Road in Co Kerry between 8.30am and 9am on Sunday. The death of the cyclist occurs as concerns are growing due to a spike in fatalities on the roads.

While many of the recent high profile crashes resulted in multiple fatalities, there were also three deaths of cyclists on the roads of the Republic in recent months.

"The male cyclist, aged in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has been removed to University Hospital Kerry where a post mortem will take place," the Garda statement said of the latest fatality on Sunday.

"The road is currently closed for an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them."

Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and who were travelling on Killorglin to Cromane Road, this morning between 8:20am and 9:00am, are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.
