From the elation of this fantastic ZLM Tour win to a horror crash in Utah, Matt Brammeier has seen it all this year. But he hasn't lost his sense of humour.
Matt Brammeier is still out of action recovering from a horrific crash while riding the Tour of Utah in August. But he has, thankfully, not lost his sense of humour.
The four-time Irish elite road race champion was keeping a close eye on the action in the opening round of the 2015-2016 Superprestige cyclo-cross series on Sunday where his partner Nikki Harris was in action.
Harris is a top flight international cyclocross rider and finished 4th at the World Championships earlier this year.
On Sunday in Holland she came close to scoring a major early season win when she finished 2nd behind European and Belgian champion Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP).
On offer to the winner was a massive BBQ, below.
Brammeier (MTN-Quebeka) took to Twitter to bemoan the fact it would have been a fantastic prize to add to his weight in beer that he claimed at the Tour of Flanders after winning a special prime from the breakaway.
Referring to the beer, the BBQ that got away today and the crash he was lucky to survive he said in a Tweet to Harris: “70 litres of beer and a giant BBQ. It could have been a fairytale season (minus the near death)”
@Nikkiharris86 70 litres of beer & a giant BBQ. It could have been a fairytale season (minus the near death ;-) )

Sanne Cant with the giant BBQ she took away after her victory at the opening round of the 2015-2016 Superprestige cyclo-cross series in Holland on Sunday.

Brammeier’s fantastic ride in the Tour of Flanders and his winning his weight in beer was immortalised by a famous Belgian newspaper cartoonist.

Brammeier loses control of the bike moments before crashing into a car during the Tour of Utah in August.
