Irish international Ryan Mullen added to his growing reputation in Co Mayo this evening, Tuesday, when he blasted home for the win in the opening TT stage of this year’s Junior Tour of Ireland.
The 17-year-old national junior road race and TT champion clocked an average speed of 44.96kph for the 7km course just outside Castlebar, for a time of 9 mins 20.67 seconds.
That was quickest of the 66 riders in the international field, giving the Irish team the yellow jersey for the first road stage tomorrow; a 105km lumpy run starting and finishing in Westport.
UK rider Hugh Carthy (Maxgear Champion) pushed Mullen the closest in this evening’s TT, coming home just 3.77 seconds down. In third was US rider Brendan Rhim (KMS Cycling), 5.16 seconds down. A first year junior, he rode the A4 race in Bunclody, Co Wexford, on Sunday and finished second behind his team mate Ansel Dickey.

Mullen’s team mate on the Irish squad in the Junior Tour, Cormac Clarke from Newry was fourth this evening; just 10.7 seconds off the pace and a real prospect for the yellow jersey on the road in coming days.
