Having decided to walk away from the bike last year after a series of crash-related injuries, Jack Wilson came back to the sport.
He was convinced to do so by the people at the head of his An Post-Chainreaction team, Sean Kelly and Kurt Bogaerts.
And now two stages into the Rás and with the first real climbing about to start, Wilson is 4th overall; best placed Irishman and just 13 seconds off the race lead.
He says he is in the race mostly to help his team's sprinters who are hunting for stage wins but will also chase personal results.
But with renewed passion for the bike game and having ridden really well abroad of late, there is perhaps a lot more in Wilson's tank than even he thinks.
