Willie
Smit, the South African riding for Katusha Alpecin, has shown off a knee wound with
16 stitches as he attempts to continue in La Vuelta.
The 26-year-old former African road race champion, who is in his second year at WorldTour level, is making his Grand Tour debut in Spain.
He was
one of the fallers in the crash with 1km to go yesterday on stage 14, won by
Ireland’s Sam Bennett.
However,
while Bora-hansgrohe’s Bennett was powering to stage glory, Smit was back the
road on the tarmac in a lot of pain.
As the
photo he has shared shows, he sliced open his knee and required 16 stitches.
Despite
today’s stage 15 being a brutal outing in the mountains, he has decided to
start as he really wants to finish the race.
We
wish him the best of luck, though that looks like a leg that would be better
rested.
