It has to be top of the bucket list for any cyclist; riding on the Wild Atlantic Way along the stunning west coast of Ireland. And making that trip - with your buddies - has now been made much easier.
Wild Atlantic Way calls out to Irish and UK cycling clubs
What better way to spend a few days this spring than head westwards to the Wild Atlantic Way?
And now thanks to one of Ireland’s most innovative cycling events, you can ride the spectacular route with your club mates.
You can go to a place of extreme natural beauty and ride your bike as part of this breathtaking event.
The Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif started last year. The first edition was held in September.
And now twice each year – in spring and autumn – the event will bring cyclists from across the country, and abroad, together to ride the Wild Atlantic Way.
The sportif is 16 daily rides, or stages as they are called. The event runs from April 20th to May 8th. It’s four blocks of four stages.
You can sign for a single stage, a block of four stages or for the entire event along the whole of the Wild Atlantic Way.
There’s a break in the cycling between each four-day block. Those transition days enable riders who’ve done their block to be transferred home and for others to arrive.
Those transition days are hosted in Dingle, Clifden and Donegal town.
Many riders are signing up for a four-stage block with the plan of returning in September, or next spring, to ride the next block.
The route takes you 2,152km from Kinsale, Co Cork, to the Inishowen peninsula in Co Donegal.
And when you sign up all you need to worry about is enjoying the road.
All of your needs, from support on the road to baggage transport and the all-important accommodation, are taken care of by the organisers Ride Wild.
They're backed by Fáilte Ireland and they do the planning for you. If you want a measure of their forensic attention to detail follow this link.
A single day entry costs €75. A four-stage block, including overnight stays, costs €695.
There are also customised Wild Atlantic Way jerseys and shower jackets for all riders.
And now the event is calling out to cycling clubs, or groups, with special offers for those looking to sign up as a group.
Details of all these offers can also be had from [email protected].
Club or group free places
If a cycling club or group signs up 10 or more cyclists for any of the single day stages, the event will give them an extra two places free.
It brings the cost down to €62:50 per person if they divide the cost of 10 by 12. This is geared towards clubs doing a day stage in their area.
A return transfer is included for all the day stages, meaning you’re brought back to where you started.
Club or group transfers
If a cycling club or group anywhere in the country signs up 10 or more cyclists for any block of four stages, transfers are being offered from your home base to the starting host town.
And then a return transfer is laid on to your home base from their finishing host town.
The cost of that transport to and from the route is €25 per person each way, including your bike.
The idea here is to make it as easy as possible for you to come and join the event.
UK cyclist airport transfers
For UK cycling clubs or groups who sign up 10 or more cyclists for any block of four stages, free airport transfers within Ireland will be provided for the group and their bikes.
For example, if you sign up for block two from Dingle to Clifden, you will be picked up at whatever airport you fly into and brought to Dingle.
And then you will be brought back to the airport from Clifden.
