Which British sports have most dopers? If somebody asked you that, what would your reply be?

Here at stickybottle we obviously write about cycling. So we don’t bring you news of doping cases in other sports.

That said, we have covered the very occasional non-cycling dope case when it reflects an issue of interest in doping in Irish sport generally.

But specialist sports news outlets like us only really carry reports on doping cases in the sport they cover.

And the mainstream media does not take the same level of interest in doping across all sports.

It means that via the media we very rarely, if ever, get a broad picture of the doping situation across all sports for comparative purposes.

However, UK Anti Doping has issued a list of all of the bans it has imposed that are currently being served for anti-doping rule violations

It offers a rare and interesting insight into what sports are most represented in the doping hall of fame, as it were.

As we can see from the list of 49 current bans being served for anti-doping rule violations; rugby – at least British rugby - is in the midst of a significant doping problem at present.

More than half – 27 to be precise - of the bans imposed by UK Anti Doping are currently being served by rugby players.

There are 17 bans being served in rugby union and 10 in rugby league.

Boxing and cycling are next with six and five doping-related bans being served in each respectively.

Of the five cycling bans, two are British Cycling Federation and three are Cycling Time Trials.

Weightlifting also has five bans currently being served, followed by athletics with two.

And in each of the following sports, one doping ban is currently being served; soccer (FA), wrestling, ice hockey, bobsleigh.
