When you see this notice, you know cycling is taking over Ireland

You know cycling is taking over as a mainstream sport where you see a sign like this in rural Ireland...

As the old cliché goes, cycling is the new golf. And judging by this sign that has appeared recently in Co Wicklow it looks like it’s really happening.

With Glencullen Golf Club having ceased to operate as an arena for women and men to hit white balls around with clubs, it’s being turned over for use as a cycling facility.

The sign above, shared by journalist Ian O’Riordan on Twitter, reveals a planning application to change the use of a building on the site and the lands themselves.

The planning application was made to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council last month and as part of making the application public, notices have now been erected in the area by applicant Anne Davey.

The notice outline what is being sought reads: “Permission for change of use of existing agricultural shed to mountain bike storage, rental and repair shed and installation of bicycle pump track and 3 no non illuminated signs and associated works.”

Cyclocross races have already been held on the old golf course and cyclists have been making good use of the lands since the gold club ceased using the lands.

But it’s great to see an official planning application underway to ensure a permanent cycling facility will operate on the site.
