After a very successful weekend hosting three separate events at the Wexford Two Day, the county of Wexford has been chosen to host next year’s National Road Championships.

Announcing the news on its Facebook pages Wexford Wheelers and Gorey CC both said the bid to host the title races – for elite men and women and Masters riders – based in Wexford Town had been successful.

The championships will be hosted by Wexford Cycling; an organisation within the county to which many local clubs are affiliated.

The plan for Wexford Cycling to host the championships was first put forward by well known cycling photographer Sean Rowe and then supported by the rest of the organisation.

The venue for the event has been chosen earlier than usual following a number of mishaps this year when a promoting club could not be found for a long time.

In the lead up to championship weekend at the end of June, Dublin club Orwell Wheelers stepped in and volunteered to host the racing.

However, after announcing the Phoenix Park as the base for the events it was forced to switch to a course based around Blessington, Co Wicklow.

But no sooner were those plans in place than it was forced to change again; to Kicullen, Co Kildare, where the titles were decided in a great weekend of action.

The championships have expanded in recent years to include Masters road races.

The schedule now involves the elite and U23 men’s and women’s TT championships on Thursday of the last week in June.

This has been followed in recent years by the Masters 40, Masters 50 and Masters 60 road races on Saturday followed the elite and U23 men’s road race and women’s road race concluding the weekend on Sunday.

We’ll have more news on this when we get it.
