“We'll be in at the deep end but we're here to compete”

Eoin Morton has said he and the Dublin Thunder team are “in at the deep end” for the inaugural World Cycling League track meet in Los Angeles which starts tomorrow, Friday.

The two-day event has attracted composite track squads from all over the US as well as Mexicoand after arriving on Wednesday, the men and women in green have received the warmest of welcomes.

“The fanfare over us being here is great - especially with yesterday being St. Paddy's day.

“It's huge deal over here anyway and even more so that we are here representing Ireland,” said Morton.

The Irish squad of Morton, Con Collis (both UCD-Fitzcycles CC), Fintan Ryan (DID.ie), Eammon Byrne, Lydia Gurley, Eimear Moran and Susie Mitchell (all Sundrive Track Team) are one of six teams taking part and are keen to just get racing now.

“The track is sweet,” said Morton, “it's based on the same campus as where the LA Galaxy are based.

“We had a two-hour session yesterday just to flush out the legs after the flight because we’ll need to be fresh.

“The racing is going to hard; there are some seriously experienced riders at the event and loads of very good six-day riders.

“We'll be in at the deep end but we are here to compete.”

According to an article that appeared today in the LA Daily News;

“The intent of WCL TeamTrak is more engagement through fan interaction, giving them more a vested interest specifically through having teams to root for as well as brave-new-sport smartphone access to performance metrics such as a cyclist’s power output, pedalling cadence and heart rate.

“World Cycling League CEO and principal developer David Chauner, working with AEG on this inaugural launch, says his plan of taking the best of indoor cycling and world-class riders and adding music, lights and real-time scoring is to make it “a fast-moving program full of color, excitement and displays of power and endurance.”

The event will be streamed online here ; Saturday (2.30am), Sunday (8:30 pm) and Monday (2:30am).
