Sam Bennett went in La Vuelta under pressure having failed to hit his stride so far this season. But that was all put to bed at the first time asking as the Irishman took a brilliant win on stage 2 in Utrecht today.
His main Bora-hansgrohe lead-out men Ryan Mullen and Danny van Poppel have performed very well in their roles this season. Bennett himself said several times in recent months that he was the weakest link in the chain, but insisted he could come good.
And today when he was true to his word, the celebrations were passionate as he greeted Van Poppel and Mullen just after the finish.
A beaming and clearly very relieved Bennett can be heard telling Mullen "we need that, man". They needed it and they got it, with lots more chances to come.
