Was Wiggins mocking Froome running up 'The Struggle'? Take a look

The ascent of The Struggle was described by some pros at the Tour of Britain today as 'brutal', with Dan Martin saying it was like Amstel Gold. Bradley Wiggins even ran over the summit!

Bradley Wiggins may have been the first Briton to win the Tour de France and bagged another gold medal at the Olympic Games just a few weeks ago.

But currently riding the Tour of Britain, he’s very much a passenger (so far) in what is his last big road race on home soil.

And today on stage 2 Wiggins decided to mock his lowly position out the back of the race by dismounting and running over the summit of the aptly name climb of The Struggle.

Or maybe he was taking the piss out of former team mate Chris Froome’s run up Ventoux on the Tour in July?

The Struggle is 4.5km in length and has a maximum gradient of 20 per cent.

And with the fans along the roadside having gotten a soaking for their troubles, they were delighted to see Wiggins lap it up for them.

He would finish fifth from last on the day in a group almost 23 minutes down.

Ireland’s Dan Martin (Etixx-QuickStep) was 3rd and even though he was at the head of affairs and is one of the best in the world at shorter sharp climbs, he said The Struggle was, well, a real struggle.

“It was steeper than anything we ride. The last two days just feels like the race is 10 hours long.

“It’s the race most like Amstel Gold in the calendar – the roads are left right, left right. Mentally it’s really hard.”
