When pro-Palestine protestors made the roads impassable on the final stage at La Vuelta in Madrid the race was abandoned, amid unusual and chaotic scenes. The final podium celebrations were also cancelled, as some protestors clashed with police in Madrid.
However, that didn't stop the teams quickly arranging an unofficial final podium presentation in a hotel car park in Madrid. They presented their jerseys - overall, points, mountain and 'young rider' - to mark their achievements in the race.
The teams used cooler boxes for the three steps to the podium and had their own sound system. They also sourced small bottles of champagne, with team staff presenting jerseys to their own riders.
“I’m super proud of this overall win, my first Vuelta and the third Grand Tour of my career”, said Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease a Bike) after securing overall victory, to add to his two wins in the Tour de France.
“It’s been three tough weeks. I felt very strong in the first week and managed to win twice. Afterwards I had a more difficult phase, but luckily I came back during the final weekend. My stage win on Bola del Mundo gave me great satisfaction. It was a beautiful way to crown this Vuelta.”
