The bike is a Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL4 and was one of a number given to riders for free by the company especially for the London Games.

The now-retired rider also sold the Kazakh jersey he wore on the podium for $10,000 and a limited edition Astana pro team jersey with his name and Olympic rings on for $2,500.

The funds have been given to the charity Bolashak, which helps young children awaiting major operations or organ transplants or who need assistance because they suffer from cerebral palsy.

The 39-year-old raised the money at a charity auction in the Kazakh city of Almaty after a sportive there. He was a controversial winner of the Olympic title, taking the gold medal from a breakaway after coming back from a doping ban.
