Vingegaard crashes trying to drop amateur cyclist on descent in Spain | Video

Pedro García Fernández, a local cyclist, posted details on his Strava, saying he happened upon Jonas Vingegaard out training and saying the Dane crashed - confirmed by his team - is he tried to drop him

Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) has suffered a crash out training, apparently coming off his bike in Spain as he was being followed by a fan, on a bike, down a descent.

The amateur rider was trying to follow behind Vingegaard and the Dane was also being recorded for a time by a cyclist riding behind him. It was not immediately clear how long before the crash that footage was recorded and there is no suggestion anyone else was involved in the crash apart from Vingegaard.

The circumstances of the crash have resulted in his team urging fans to back off pro riders on the open roads and let them get on with their training. Thankfully, it does not appear Vingegaard will be impacted by the crash.

"Jonas Vingegaard crashed during training on Monday. Fortunately, he is okay and did not sustain any serious injuries," Visma Lease a Bike said in a brief statement on Tuesday morning.

"In general, as a team we would like to urge fans on bikes to always put safety first. For both your own and others’ wellbeing, please allow riders to train and give them as much space and peace as possible."

The crash happened just outside Málaga, Spain, and though Vingegaard was left with abrasions, he does not appear to have suffered any broken bones or other serious injury.

A local cyclist, Pedro García Fernández, posted details on his Strava account, suggesting Vingegaard was trying to drop him when he came off his bike.

“He was going down fast just to leave me behind and ended up on the ground,” he said, with video also emerging of the Dane being filmed from behind by a pursuing rider.

He claimed the two-time Tour de France winner was doing 45kmph at the time, on a twisty road, when his front wheel went from under him, causing him to crash on his front - chest and face.
