Following on from the re-modeling of Blackrock Village in south Dublin to minimise the presence of vehicles and re-allocate space for cycling, pedestrians a similar project is now planned for Glasthule & Sandycove Village.
Car parking spaces are being reclaimed and more space is being given over to walking and for bike parking.
The intention is to make the area more "pedal friendly" and also to have outdoor seating for businesses to increase safety from Covid19 when dining or having a drink.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council also believes the changes will encourage more people cycling to the Forty Foot on the new 3.6km segregated cycleway to stop off in the village.
Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Cllr Una Power said: “I am delighted to see another scheme in our county where the public, local businesses and the council we are working together to imagine and create a better space for people to live, work and visit.”
As part of the plans restaurants, cafes and pubs will be able to apply for special Covid19 licences allowing them place seating outside to reduce the risk of Covid19 infection and make the village more attractive to visitors, especially cyclists traveling there on the cycleway.
The council said: "We believes that this initiative also presents a significant opportunity for Glasthule and Sandycove to integrate these changes with the work we are undertaking on installing the Coastal Cycle Way and provide an attractive destination or stop-off point for people walking or cycling along the coast."
