Having impressed so much on the road in recent weeks, Wout Van Aert has suffered a nasty crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen today.

The race – 180km from Roeselare to Waregem – was being run off in wet conditions when the cyclocross star came down.

He was on the inside of the peloton when he hit a marshal standing by the side of the road. Van Aert ploughed into him and both rider and marshal were knocked to the ground.

Van Aert went into the field at the side of the road. But he quickly got back to his feet and back onto his bike. His team later tweeted that he was back in the peloton after the incident.

The marshal was at that location to warn the approaching bunch of the traffic island and flexi wands.

After the incident he was kneeling at the side of the road, apparently shook after the impact. His condition was not clear but it did not look like he was seriously hurt.

Wout Van Aert (23) has been very impressive on the road of late. He has been on the attack in major races and took 3rd in the recent Strade Bianche. He also finished 10th last weekend in Gent Wevelgem.
