The latest piece of kit that Velon has fitted to the pros bikes to make the on-board live footage work has to be seen to be believed. It is simply staggering that somebody had to race with this on their bike.
There have been some terrific advances with the broadcasting of bike races in the last few years and the Velon on-board highlights of major events has been excellent.
The footage shot from tiny cameras fixed to some of the riders’ bikes have brought viewers into the peloton and some of the highlights put together of Grand Tour stages in particular have been top notch.
And now Velon is upping the game with live on-board footage and data.
We’ve already seen it in track racing and on the road, including at the Olympics, and it is currently being used at the Abu Dhabi Tour.
However, it seems getting the images off the cameras live is trickier than you might think, even with all the technology we have today.
Some of the riders have been seen with WiFi routers taped onto their bikes, with wires everywhere.
It’s like something from back in the day when the interweb was starting and you had to download computer games off a tape deck.
