The Red Hook Criterium involves racing on city streets on track bikes with no brakes. Many crashes occur and the bikes go flying into the crowd.
Here's some pretty interesting video footage of what has to rank as one of the world's craziest bike races; the Red Hook Criterium.
Essentially, it's criterium racing at night time on track bikes - with fixed wheels and no brakes.
So when crashes occur - which happens with alarming frequency - the pile-up nature of them and the overflow of bikes and riders flying into the crowds is something you don't really see at regular crit or road racing.

This is high-octane racing and looks very, very cool indeed.
Having started in Brooklyn almost four years ago, it has now spread to Milan and Barcelona.
And the men behind it, as the last video below explains, have grown a merchandise line as a spin off to the races.
The event in Brooklyn has also helped developed an area which was pretty much abandoned.
