Video: Volvo's new cyclist spray is revolutionary. But does it patronise cyclists?

Volvo has devised this new spray, in the video below, which is invisible to the eye but is highly reflective in the dark. But why is a car company suggesting it's bike riders, rather than motorists, who need to up their road safety game?

There’s no doubt that the spray paint Volvo has developed for cyclists is a wonderful product that has sprung for the ingenuity of some very bright people.

LifePaint - in the video below - is sprayed from a regular aerosol can on any item you will wear or carry on your bike – it can even be used to spray your bike.

It’s invisible to the eye in daylight hours so you don’t have to worry about sabotaging the look of anything your might spray.

But at night, it’s highly reflective in the headlights of vehicles.

The Swedish car giant collaborated with a number of UK companies to create the washable formula that lasts for 10 days.

“Every year more than 19,000 cyclists are injured on the UK’s roads,’ Nick Connor, of Volvo UK, said.

“We believe that the best way to survive a crash is not to crash, and are committed to making the roads a safer place by reducing the number of accidents.”

Volvo claims the product, which has be released for sale in some London shops but is not yet widely available, is simply part of its commitment to safer roads.

But many commentators are asking why Volvo, as a car manufacturer, didn’t make its cars safer for cyclists or more cycling friendly?

Why assume roads can be made safer by starting with cyclists?

Isn’t a car manufacturer devising a product to make cyclists bright in the dark so motorists can see them based on the premise that cyclists are the problem in the first place?

Or should we just be thankful for something new on the market that might be good for all road users, especially those on two wheels?
