In the end he said he simply battled for position and went as hard as he could once he got a clear run at the line.
"I'm so happy to get this result, you don't know what it means to me," he said Bennett.
"I had a lot of confidence coming into this, just from the feeling in my legs. I had good form recently.
“In the Tour Down Under, I felt I had the speed but I just didn't get an opportunity. I knew today with the support of the team something was possible.
“I didn't know if that was going to be a win or a top five, but I thought something was possible. In the end, I got lucky.
“The guys did a fantastic job, and I want to thank them so much."
He also laughed off any notion that he had carefully picked the wheel of Alexander Kristoff (Katusha-Alpecin) to pounce off at the finish.
"To be honest I was just fighting for position. It was hard to stay in position, so I didn't really see the front."
Sam Bennett was close to tears; proper order!
