Alejandro Valverde new world champion's kit
Love him or loathe him, this is what Alejandro Valverde is going to look like over the next 12 months in his world champion's kit.
The Spanish veteran took the rainbow bands last weekend in Innsbruck after Peter Sagan had worn them for three years.
Valverde is the first rider to come back after a two-year doping ban to win the world title. He plans to continue in the sport for at least two more years, citing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as a goal.
He unveiled his new world champion's look at a sportive on Madrid run by Movistar, the telecommunications company that sponsors his WorldTour team.
And he will race in the kit for the first time next Tuesday in Italy at Tre Valli Varesine; traditionally a warm-up race for the Tour of Lombardy.
The kit was produced by Movistar's clothing partner, the Scottish company Endura.
It said immediately Valverde won last Sunday's race, its designers consulted the UCI's technical guide to the world champion kit and began the production process.
Endura added that a series of WhatsApp messages and emails were sent between its staff in Scotland and Valverde's people in Spain and Innsbruck last Sunday evening to agree a plan.
And on Monday morning the work was already well underway. And once the design was drawn up, it said the production took less than the near seven hours it took Valverde to win the world title.
"Unlike some pro team’s clothing suppliers, Endura make kit end-to-end in-house by the same production team," it said.
"(We) produce over 50,000 garments a year for clubs and teams worldwide. This is no development lab. It’s a proper factory, employing around 60 staff, all based in Livingston, near Edinburgh."
