Video: Valverde attack that made Froome, Contador look ordinary
Alejandro Valverde put in an attack on the upper slopes of the summit finish mountain that made Chris Froome and Alberto Contador look ordinary.
Alejandro Valverde sailed to his second stage victory at Volta A Catalunya at the end of today's stage 5.
He put in an attack on the upper slopes of the summit finish mountain that made Chris Froome and Alberto Contador look ordinary.
At the end of the 182km stage from Valls to Lo Port and nearing the top of the final 8km climb, 36-year-old Valverde simply sprinted away.
He immediately distanced two of the very best climbers and stage race riders in the world.
The Spaniard, who like Contador has served a doping ban, seems to be somehow getting better with age.
He taps out a consistency of top form throughout the entire season that other leading riders can only sustain for short periods.
He now leads the race with just two stages remaining, despite having suffered a penalty of one minute imposed on his entire Movistar team for pushing in the TTT.
He beat Dan Martin for his first win on stage 3.
