The driver in Ireland was very lucky to escape a head-on collission at speed with the other car. And the guy in the US, above, performed one of the closest passes you will see.

Here's two clips that demonstrate how the safety of cyclists can sometimes be in the lap of the Gods, or rather idiot drivers.

The first clip below was recorded in the south east at the weekend by a stickybottle reader who sent it in.

And while the overtaking motorist, to be fair, gives the cyclist a decent amount of space he very nearly comes a cropper.

In his rush not to be held up by the bike rider he speeds past on a continuous white line. Another vehicle then appears in the road coming towards him.

The driver is hitting the brakes even as their car passes the cyclist, clearly in an effort to slow down and avoid the oncoming vehicle.

While he/she gets away with it, this could very easily have ended in a high-speed head-on collission. And all because the driver couldn't hang back for a few seconds before overtaking the bike rider.

The second incident below was recorded on a road in the US, with the driver of pick-up and trailer passing the lead cyclist with inches to spare.

The complete idiot gets out to remonstrate with the cyclists for daring to ride where there are no bike lanes!

With new safe-passing laws proposed for the Republic, it might be a good time to get yourself a bike-mounted camera. At least it will gather evidence, like these two clips, that youu might need one day.
