Video: Tour Suisse TT winner hits monster speeds descending

It's not enough to go up climbs very fast in hilly TTs, you have to come down them like a rocket too!

Anyone looking to win the 16.8km TT on the penultimate day of the Tour de Suisse yesterday was going to have to fly around every inch of the course.

With the test run over such a short distance and with some really good TT riders in the field, there was no time to sit back and have a breather at any point.

And that's exactly the attitude Jon Izaguirre (Movistar) took into the contest in Davos.

He rode the climb very well on the course but made sure he also pushed as much as he could going downhill.

As the clip below shows, the moto travelling behind him clocked 113km at one point by staying with him.

The rider's own data put his maximum speed at 101km.

And the results of his efforts were pretty clear by the finish.

The Spanish rider clocked a time of 21:31, a huge margin of 18 seconds ahead of Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana), with home favourite Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) in 3rd, a further second slower.

Izaguirre trailed Cancellara by 15 seconds at the first check after 6.3km but rode the climb so well he was a full 10 seconds ahead of the Swiss rider at the top of the climb.

He then went down the hill so fast and pushed all the way to the finish so that he increased his lead over Cancellara by a further nine seconds.

Colombian Lopez took the race lead and with just Sunday's hilly final stage remaining, with Andrew Talansky (Cannondale) in 2nd just 8 seconds back and TT winner Izaguirre 3rd, some 16 seconds behind the leader.

Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin), who held the race lead going into the TT, slipped to 4th, some 18 seconds off Lopez.
