Video: Tour penalises Archbold for chase back with fractured pelvis

Shane Archbold is rooming with Sam Bennett and though they are both in bits - Archbold more so - they seemed in good form in their Tour de France scratchers!

A non starter in today's TT at the Tour de France after being forced to abandon his debut Grand Tour with a fractured pelvis, Shane Archbold was given a 20 second time penalty for drafting after his high speed smash on Wednesday.

The Kiwi lead-out man for Irish sprinter Sam Bennett at Bora-Argon 18 hit a rock wall by the side of the road while descending the Col des Mosses about 70km from the finish.

Despite being cut to pieces and having a fractured pelvis - which was only confirmed with X-rays after the stage - Archbold got back on his bike and back into the grupetto.

And though there was still two hours of racing remaining, not to mention the summit finish climb of Finhaut-Emosson - which was brutally steep and just over 10km long - he got to the finish and completed the stage.

As he was getting back into the group with Bennett, Archbold drafted for a period behind his team car and was penalised 20 seconds for his troubles.

It seemed a bit silly considering the circumstances and that such incidents are normally overlooked after a puncture or crash.

One of the videos below shows Archbold in the group and unable to pedal with any normal motion after his spill.

He also sends out a goodwill message with a smiling Bennett in the background; both of them resting in their Tour de France scratchers at the time.

It's good to see they haven't lost their sense of humour after having had such a difficult experience, with Bennett crashing on the opening day and cutting his hand to pieces as he broke a finger in the bunch finish crash.
